Stop the Texts. Stop the Wrecks

With two of my kids close to the driving age, I felt the need to share the information below with the hopes that all you moms out there will share with your kids. May is Global Youth Traffic Safety Month™, a time to raise awareness of distracted driving. In 2011, eleven percent of all drivers 15-19 years old involved in fatal crashes were reported as distracted at the time of the crashes. This age group has the largest proportion of drivers who were distracted.  In order to raise awareness of this issue, the Ad Council and the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National ...

Hoax or No Hoax?

Scary when it hits home.  Hmmm, my daughter got the text about this yesterday and then my son saw it on Twitter.  When it’s your kids school in question and friends in local police departments THINK it’s a hoax, as a mom, do you send your kids to school?  If you think this stuff won’t happen where you live, think again! Who Texts More While Driving, Teens or Adults?

Well, I can honestly say that I’m not surprised at the percentages on this one.  I know my kids are sticklers when it comes to phones while driving, I’m not even allowed to touch my phone when I’m in the drivers seat or else the wrath of my kids will be upon me, but, most adults seem like they are above the law when it comes to this.  Check out the article below from the USA Today, I thought it was worth posting as a reminder to ‘put the damn phone down while you’re driving a car’! Another Broke Bone 1

My kids have had so many broken bones I’m waiting for Social Services to come and investigate me.   I say that as a joke, but only partially.  I do wonder if I’m doing something wrong because they get hurt so often.  Do you want the list if injuries in just the last 4 years?  Here it is… 1.   My daughter had stitches in her head after her twin brother bonked her with a toy, TWICE! 2.  My oldest had staples in his head when a rock rolled down a hill and hit him on the head. 3.  My ...

Facebook’s Parental Problem 2

Facebook is talking about issuing accounts to children 12 and under.  As of today,  you are supposed to be 13 to open an account,  though there is no real way to police this.  Allowing any kid to have a Facebook account is a controversial subject.  Some parents I talk to are adamantly against it.  These parents tend to have younger kids and have not yet faced the realities of having a pre-teen / teenager.   In actuality,  once you have a middle schooler, it becomes very difficult to stop them from having a Facebook account.  Not only has it become ...

Is There Poison in the Soil Below Your Home?

Ghost smelter factories existed long ago but, what remains of those factories in neighborhoods across our country is baffling.  I urge you all to take 5 minutes to watch this video below by USA Today, after a 14 month investigation, what was uncovered in the soil where these factories once stood can pose a risk to the surrounding neighborhoods. Ghost Factories Poison in the Ground To learn more about these ghost factories and to see an interactive map of the former factory sites, click here. The scary thing here is that this particular report only deals with smelters, what about ...

Letting our Tweens Spread Their Wings

I’ve always thought “tweens” was a great term for middle school kids because that is exactly what they are.  They are in between being a kid and being a young adult.  But it’s not only the children who are in this “tween” stage,  the parents are as well.  I’m speaking from experiences as a mother of a 13 year old. When your kids are in elementary school,  you know there are certain boundaries that have to be maintained.  Kids are not allowed to go walk to school by themselves.  They cannot roam the mall alone.  They cannot freely browse the ...

“Sometimes even to live is an act of courage.” – Seneca

An article from the SCV Youth Project on March 20, 2012.  This is the town in which I live so to see stuff like this, it really hits home.  With our lives being so busy, we need to stop and take a close look at our kids to make sure they are ok… The community of Santa Clarita was recently stirred from a quiet suburban slumber, with news that a young girl was found unconscious near one of the local high schools. Rumors started to spread quickly and “love and prayers” were delivered immediately via social media to the family. ...

Remember Super Bowl Fans, Buzzed Driving is Drunk Driving

Did you know getting pulled over for Buzzed Driving could cost you $10,000 in legal fees, court costs, and increased insurance rates? As the excitement and hype of the Super Bowl gets into full swing, one thing that may not be on people’s minds is buzzed driving.  However, over 10,000 people were killed in 2010 in alcohol-impaired vehicle crashes.  A buzzed driving accident can happen to anyone, anywhere, no matter which team they are rooting for. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Ad Council are continuing their Buzzed Driving is Drunk Driving PSA campaign.  So during this Super Bowl, ...
