Lightening, What’s That?

Living in Southern California, there are days when I wish for some east coast weather of black clouds and thunderstorms just to take a break from the everyday routine.  I miss just having the family hang in the house watching movies all day, cuddled up under blankets on the couch with your jammies on knowing that there’s no soccer practice, or baseball practice or football practice, shall I go on?  The other day we had one of those days.  My kids woke me up at 5 am on a Saturday morning all excited screaming, “it’s raining, and there’s thunder and we think we just saw lightening!”  We all stood by the window watching the sky and the rain fall, it was great.  But, the rain left as quickly as it came, and worse yet, the soccer games were still on.

Off we trudged to the soccer fields, by 9 o’clock, the clouds were back and so was the thunder and lightening.  Within 5 minutes the league cancelled the games due to the lightening.  What amazed me was the fact that the majority of these LA kids at the field had no idea what lightening was, apparently it’s rare that you see it out here.  I listened as parents tried to explain the concept of lightening and why the clouds looked the way they did as they rolled in.  My daughter even grabbed my camera and took this photo of the clouds as they hovered over the fields.

This stormy weather went on all day but around 5 pm the clouds started to clear out enough to see the sun begin to set.  Once again, my daughter grabbed my camera to snap a photo of the sky she thought was so cool, vibrant pink and purple clouds.

Now she tells me she wants to be a photographer when she grows up, we’ll see how long that lasts!
