We just had some friends arrive from Austria for a visit. My husband was unable to take the day off yesterday to hang out with them so I jumped right in and said that I would entertain them. Since it was going to be a beautiful day and we had mutual friends in Ventura (which is right on the coast), I thought, what a perfect place to go.
My husband then said, “I’ll come home early to get the kids and oh, just in case you’re not home early, what’s on their schedule?”
I thought to myself, hmm, here’s an opportunity for me to hand over the reins and stay out past school pick-up time!
I replied, “oh, not too much, just homework, piano, guitar, football practice and batting cages.” While in my book, this was one of my easier days, he had a look of fear on his face.
So off to Ventura we went. Some coffee and banana bread at our friend’s house, a stroll down the main street in Ventura, a tour of the San Buenaventura Mission, and then a stop at the Anacapa Brewing Company, afterall, it was 11 o’clock, time to taste some of the local brew! We stayed there for a little while and thought, why not just stay and have some lunch. I texted my husband to tell him where we were and his text back was “I hope you’re having fun.” I sure was!
Our next stop was the Ventura Harbor Yacht Club where we took a sail out on our friend’s sailboat. Ok, do I look like I was enjoying myself?
You bet, I was having a blast. Three o’clock (school pick up time) came and went and before I knew it we were having cocktails at Brophy’s, a cool restaurant situated right on the harbor. We were asked to go back to the house to join out friends for dinner, I was more than happy to oblige. We sat and had a wonderful steak dinner while we talked and laughed. Before I knew it, the time was 9:30 pm and I knew we needed to head back home after such a relaxing day.
When we arrived at the house at 10:30 pm, no one greeted us at the door, not even the dog, the house was quiet and everyone was asleep.
When I woke the kids up this morning, I didn’t get my usual good morning mom, but rather I was blasted with…
Why weren’t you home when I got home from school? I tried to wait up for you, why were you gone so long? We had to eat leftovers for dinner and they didn’t taste good. I couldn’t find the computer codes for my on-line text book. And, you weren’t home to help me with my homework.
My response, “while I’m sorry I wasn’t here, sometimes moms are entitled to a day off!”

A day off, without feeling guilty… sweet!
