Less than a year ago, one of my friends got a new puppy. He’s a great dog, listens well and is very cute. Now that he’s a little older, it seems that he has developed this problem of eating his own poop. To make matters worse, he convinced their older dog that eating poop was good so they were both enjoying themselves out in the back yard and snacking when they felt the need.
So, I’ve come to find out that this little disgusting habit is rather common in the dog arena because this behavior even has its own name, coprophagia! Coprophagia is a fancy name for a nutritional deficiency. There are a variety of reasons why dogs do this and even more remedies for it. From pills you can give your dog to adding meat tenderizer to their food, there are so many options to deter the habit. One can always just have their kids follow their dog around and pick up the poop as soon as it comes out. I think that is a great alternative to a 10 minute time out.
So Lizz, as for the latest remedy, my mother-in-law just read an article that says adding crushed pineapple to your dog’s food will make their poop totally unappealing. Whether or not the poop eating has stopped, there’s always another option for the pups!
awesome! i was looking this for ages…
