My two younger sons are totally into the sport of Airsoft. According to Wikipedia, airsoft is defined as a sport in which participants shoot round non-metallic pellets launched via replica firearms. In mom’s word, it’s a sport in which my boys have what looks like real military weapons and they use plastic bb’s to shoot the living crap out of each other!
Honestly, it’s pretty fun. We’ve gone out as a family in the canyons by our house, split into two teams and had some really cool battles. You have to strategize with each other in an attempt to be the last team standing. Do the bb’s hurt? Ahh, a little, maybe if shot at close range, but they certainly don’t leave you with welts like paintball does. It’s all a matter of wearing layers.
In addition to layers, eye and face protection is a must. The kids that come over our house to play are very well aware of the rules and know that if they don’t follow them, this mom is going to do some major ass kickin’! All gear must be worn at all times, no shooting at close range, bring your own ammo and no shooting around the house. The last rule quickly went into effect after all the crevices in my garage and driveway became filled with multi-colored bb’s!
I love the fact that the boys haven’t asked for any LEGOs lately, they would rather shop at the local army navy surplus store. I’ve never seen boys so excited to go shopping. On Saturday, they were invited to an airsoft birthday battle and boy were they prepared. After receiving some pretty cool stuff for Xmas and their birthday, this is what they looked like heading off to the party.
I love that they each chose a different camoflauge pattern and they have to keep themselves so matchy, matchy!
Mom’s word of advice when it comes to airsoft, buy the biodegradable bb’s, believe me, you’ll thank me for it!
