The Cell Phone Saga

Written by Alyssa Banko Published in SCV Health &Family Magazine March 2013 A publication of The Signal The Cell Phone Saga I just came home from my store after arguing with them about my son’s broken cell phone and I’m so aggravated that I want to just throw the dang phone through the window.  Instead, I scooped myself a huge bowl of ice cream with chocolate sauce, whipped cream and sprinkles and sat and commiserated over this stupid phone.  Why can’t we just go back to the darn pay phones ?  And I’ll send my kids out the door with a pocketful of ...

I Support the NTSB Cell Phone Ban, How About You?

I am so tired of reading and hearing about fatal car accidents that occur because of the whole cell phone distraction thing. Driving a motor vehicle is difficult enough, especially for younger drivers, and when you add the cell phone to the mix, the results are never good. I was excited to hear earlier this week that the NTSB is looking into a nationwide cell phone ban in motor vehicles. I saw these statistics come across my desk this morning and was a little shocked that the number of supporters isn’t higher. Take a look at the accident below that ...

Get Off Your Cell Phone and Pay Attention to the Road 1

M two youngest kids had a minimum day today so I decided to take them out for lunch. On our way to Fat Burger, I decided to call and order a salad at another place. One of my sons offered to go get my salad so, I took him up on it. I was parked right across from the restaurant waiting for him to come out. Like a good kid, he came out, looked both ways and started to walk across the parking lot. He was heading right towards me when I see this car come flying toward him out ...

Mom, What the Heck is a Pay Phone?

We were in the airport one day when my son discovered something that intrigued him.  I turned to him when he called my name and I saw this… He thought this “pay phone” thing was really funny.  He questioned why they even existed since today “everyone has a cell phone!”   When I told him that when I was his age, cell phones didn’t exist.  A few years later, the first ones that came to the market had to be carried around in this little suitcase type of bag because they were so bulky.  The kids got quite a kick out ...

Kerplunk!

We seem to have a problem with cell phones in our house, that is, trying to keep them operational. I myself am on my 6th phone of the year. Phone #1 – Destroyed after being thrown in the bag with the spray sunscreen and I forgot to lock the spray nozzle. Phone #2 – Worked for 2 weeks and then decided to stop working completely (not my fault) Phone #3 – Melted after I left it next to the bbq as I grilled dinner Phone #4 – Forgot to put it’s life preserver on when it jumped into the lake ...

My Thursday Night Bitch Session

While driving around town today, my car was almost slammed into at an intersection.  Thank goodness my kids weren’t with me because if they were and I was actually hit, whomever was on the ride side of my car would be in a serious state of hurt.  I’m talking inches away when the other car stopped.  You may be asking why I’m writing a post about this.  Well, I’ll tell you because it really pissed me off.  The woman driving in the car that almost hit me had her friggin cell phone in her ear chatting away, not paying attention, drove right ...

That Feels Really Good!

My husband and I got to go out the other night so we had a babysitter with the kids.  When we came home I asked her how they were and for once, she said they were all GREAT.  She then started giggling.  When I asked her why she was giggling she said, “that Kyra, you better keep an eye on her, she’s gonna be trouble.”  This perplexed look came over my face and then she said, “I was up in her room reading her a bedtime story and she was playing with my cell phone.  She dropped the phone between ...
