The Hollister Gift Card, Not So Cool

So Hollister, you may be the cool clothing destination for teenagers, but you have me, and a bunch of other moms, a bit perturbed. Teenage girls like to pick out their own clothes, since moms these days have ‘no clue’ when it comes to the latest styles, so the perfect birthday gift for these tween and teenage girls are gift cards to their favorite stores.  One of the stores high on a 15 year old girl’s list is, of course, Hollister. Now I believe Hollister needs to re-think a bit of their marketing.  Here’s a conversation between a mom and the ...

My Daughter’s Insatiable Curiosity

My 8 year old daughter was very curious last night while I was tucking her into bed. “Mommy?  How do you get a husband?” “Well,  when you’re a grownup you meet a man who you like,  who you think is handsome and smart and funny,  and maybe he thinks you’re pretty and smart and thoughtful,  and then you decide you want to spend your life together. “ “Do you have to make a baby if you get married?” “No,  you don’t HAVE to.” “Does it hurt?” “You mean to make a baby?” “When the baby comes out.” “Yes,  it can.” ...

Sugar and Spice, but Not Always Nice: One Woman’s Quest to Put an End to Mean Girls 1

Mommy Warriors Interview with Dana Kerford –  Founder of GirlPower We hear it over and over again.  Boys are so much easier to raise than girls.  Boys are basic.  Their needs are obvious.  Their school conflicts are usually resolved quickly.   Girls,  on the other hand,  are complicated.  They’re emotional and sensitive.  Their school conflicts can last weeks,  months,  years, and because these complicated beings are trying to have friendships with other complicated beings,  all hell often breaks loose. Dana Kerford,  founder of GirlPower,  teacher and mother,  is making it her life’s mission to help girls around the world navigate ...

Our Mommy-Daughter Diary

I have an 8 year old daughter who is not terribly verbal.  When she has a difficult time at school,  she often avoids talking about it.  When something is bothering her,  she finds it hard to open up.  And as she matures and has more complex emotions,  she is struggling to express things to me.  This has been bothering me,  so I was searching for a way to help her communicate.  Then my friend told me about her mother-daughter journal and I knew I had to try it. Here is how it works.  You get a small journal or diary.  ...

Blondes at the LA County Fair 1

OMG, after living in Southern California for 8 years, I can with CERTAINTY that the folks around here are a bit different than the little rural New Jersey town we moved from.  With that being said, I just HAD to share this commercial for the LA County Fair.  ENJOY! www.mommywarriors.com

Bathroom Encroachment

As if being a 14 year old girl and having your own bathroom isn’t enough, my daughter seems to think she has run out of counter space in her bathroom. Not only has she taken over part of the counter space in the guest bathroom downstairs but, now she is slowly working her way into my bathroom. The buck has got to STOP here.  My bathroom is off limits, it’s the only place I can escape to a little peace and quiet . For heavens’s sake this girl is getting ridiculous, how many different lotions, sprays, brushes, makeup bags, nail ...

Teenage Girls and Mirror Time! 2

What happened to my easy going, pony-tailed little girl?  Whatever clothes I bought were fine, she rolled out of be  ready to go and make-up, that was a joke.  Fast forward two years through junior high and now I have a soon-to-be freshman that takes TWO hours to get ready to walk out the door.  What did I miss? The lo000ong showers, picking out of the clothes, flat ironing the long blonde locks, making up the face, changing the nail polish, picking out the right shoes….AHHHHH!  Thank goodness she has her own bathroom otherwise we’d never get out of the ...

The Allure of High Heels

My daughter and her friend wanted to do some shopping after their last volleyball tournament.  Hey, rather than fight traffic, we said ok!  As soon as we walked into the store, the girls made a bee line for the shoe department.  They were on the hunt for some high heels and boy did they find them.  Check out these two just trying to stand in these monsters heels! The funny part about the whole thing was that people in the store were looking at them pretty strangely based on the outfits they had on.  Those tight little shorts along with ...

The Last Soccer Game :(

Well, I guess it’s inevitable when you have kids that are into sports. This past weekend, I watched my daughter play her very last soccer game.    That’s her in the orange jersey and it was hard for me to not have tears in my eyes as the the last whistle blew (of course, I didn’t let her see the tears).  She started playing soccer when she was 5 years old and for 9 years I have been on the sidelines watching her play a game that she loves.  To all the great coaches she has had over the years, ...

Golf and Potential Free College for Our Daughters

Article provided by Scratch Golf…Accelerated Very few events or acts of our government have affected college sports more than Title IX. This act passed and then enacted in the mid-1970’s places women’s sports on a equal basis with men’s at the high school and collegiate levels. In essence, the schools must have about the same number of sports and participants for both men and women. In the golf arena, there are 775 colleges, universities and junior colleges with scholarships for young ladies. Overall, the total number of scholarships available for women is over 1800! But what is sad, is that ...
